Rosetrees is supporting Glen Irving, a young Royal College of Surgeons fellow in his research into curcumin’s ability to prevent chemo-resistance. His work under Professor William Steward at University of Leicester has shown on cancer models to increase the effect of chemotherapy. As a result of this research a clinical trial is soon to be up and running at hospitals in Leicester.
The BBC have featured this in an article on 7 May 2012. Please see below.

Richard Ross, Chairman of Rosetrees was featured in the Independent’s 2012 Happy List, naming 100 outstanding people whose volunteering, caring, fund-raising, mentoring, charity founding, or selflessness makes Britain a more contented, better-adjusted, supportive, and happier place.

According to The Independent, this list celebrates a different set of values, honouring those who give back, rather than take, those who help others without thought of enriching themselves, and, in many cases, at considerable personal cost.

Rosetrees commends The Independent for creating such a list that acknowledges those individuals that are making a real difference on what ever level they can; they are a shining example to us all.

Richard Ross was interviewed by Matt Frei on Channel 4 News commenting on the proposed cap on charity tax relief.

Richard Ross is an experienced commentator on philanthropy, having spoken on Sky News and Channel 4 and featured many times in the broadsheet press. Richard is a passionate advocate of charitable giving and feels that the Government is confusing apples and pears with this misguided cap. They are confusing the vast majority of good people who donate to philanthropy with the minority who are misusing the tax benefits.

Richard Ross is featured in yesterday’s Sunday Times, main section, page 16 “Disaster Appeal”. Richard is commenting on The Government’s plans to cap relief for charitable giving citing people using it for tax avoidance purposes.

The aritlce states: One of Britain’s most generous philanthropists delivered a blunt warning to the government this weekend: its actions mean he may cut back on giving.

Richard Ross, whose family’s charitable foundation, Rosetrees Trust, has donated £1m to medical research during the past year alone, is angry that government plans to crack down on tax dodgers will also hit philanthropists.

“Of course it is going to affect the amount I give” he said. “They are saying we are not going to give you the advantages that we have given you in the past but we want you to carry on being more generous and philanthropic”.

Ross, 69, who will rank in the top 25 of this year’s Sunday Times Giving List when it is published this month added “Why should they tar 99% good people with the 1% who are bad? It is a slur because being philanthropic is not something that most people do”

The article also featured similar comments by other benefactors Sir Vernon Ellis, Chairman of English national opera, David Ross, co-founder of Carphone Warehouse and Sir Tom Hunter.

Mr Ross, Philanthropist of the Year, told The Independent: “You want to encourage people to be more philanthropic, not limit them. [This decision] can only harm the country. They are using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. They are penalising everybody.”

The article listed the 10 leading philanthropists in the UK with JK Rowling at Number 1, Sir Elton john at Number 5 and Richard Ross at Number 7.

Rosetrees is part funding research by Prof Aroon Hingorani and his PhD Daniel Swerdlow, in their research to better understand the connection between inflammation and atherosclerosis, the build up of fatty deposits on artery walls that causes the disease.

In their recent study published in The Lancet a protein involved in inflammation (interleukin-6 receptor or IL6R) appears to play a causal role in coronary heart disease. The findings support the notion that inflammation plays an important role in the development of atherosclerosis.
This may indicate that an existing anti-inflammatory drug, acting on this receptor, may offer a new potential approach for preventing coronary heart disease, the world’s leading cause of death.

Rosetrees is proud to be supporting this exciting research. For more information please see attached article in medpage Today

Experts have uncovered more evidence that Botox could be an effective treatment for an overactive bladder.

Rosetrees is supporting Dr Douglas Tincello who is carrying out a large clinical trial, to evaluate how effective and safe Botox treatment is in the long term for women who suffer from urinary incontinence caused by overactive bladder disease.

Dr Tincello’s research has shown that by injecting a tiny quantity of the toxic protein into the bladder wall of women with overactive bladder syndrome, it halved the numbers of times when women with moderate to severe urinary incontinence urgently needed the lavatory, or ended up having a little accident. It also cut the number of times they needed the bathroom by a quarter.

Rosetrees is excited to be supporting Dr Tincello’s research and hopes that this research will lead to a new treatment for this condition, which severely impacts quality of life.

Rosetrees is supporting this flagship programme with the Royal College of Surgeons. Unfortunately the development of clinical research in surgery has lagged behind that of non-surgical disciplines. At the present time, clinical trials in all surgical disciplines comprise only 10% of those being undertaken just in cardiology. Rosetrees will support one of the new clinical trials centres which will aim to develop new researchers, increase the critical mass of surgical trials and making access to trials easier for researchers and patients.

Three quarters of acute asthma attacks are caused by viral infections, treated with steroid tablets which not only stop ‘bad’ but also ‘good’ inflammation. Previous research has discovered that there is a single switch inside the virus infected cell that can turn off bad inflammation whilst preserving good inflammation. This switch is a protein called Pellino-1. Professor Ian Sabroe from the University of Sheffield aims to take the first step in creating a drug that would prevent Pellino-1 working and thus be used as an alternative treatment for such asthma attacks.
